Not entirely. Traction control was optional, not part of the Y87 package, but you could get the packages together. One doesn't prevent or provide the other. The code for traction control is like NW9 I believe.
Traction control became an option on V6's in 1999. You HAD to get the Y87 package to get it because it requires the posi rear end to work properly. So you can have a Y87 without ASR/TCS but you CANNOT have a car with ASR/TCS without Y87. I have the original 1999 book when I bought mine and it outlines this.

That only applies to the 1999 model year, correct? I have a 2000 Camaro with the ASR system and my car does not have the Y87 package.

When I was shopping for the car, most of the V6 Camaros had traction control but no Y87. I think most of these had GU6 and G80.
When shopping for my car, the dealer had to check all over the south west to find a Y87 and only found 3 Y87 cars available. All had similar equipment and none had traction control.
Then why can't I spin my tires on my 97 from a dead stop? I've got it to spin when there's very little loose gravel but i can't get it to chirp em at an intersection and I don't have the Y87 package. I drove my friends 95 Z28 and his acts the same way and the ASR light comes on.

How many miles? You may need to check your tranny mount and shocks... I need to replace my mount soon...
You can have Y87 without traction control. In 99, you had to have Y87 to get traction control. I did notice that after they had decided to end production, a lot of non-factory things started happening. In 2001-02 I did see several cars that had posi rears without the Y87 package but had traction control anyway. So in short, in order to have ASR/TCS, you NEED the posi rear end, and it most cases, that means you have the Y87 package.
But regardless, my 96 would not have it. Is it for sure that the code is NW9? I don't have that code. I guess I am confused as to why I have a traction light on my instrument cluster. Does having a manual transmission have any bearing on this?
Haven’t done anything on the Camaro, but put LEDs on my truck headlights . And my oil pressure sensor went out on the truck so going to fix that this...
