  • Part number for Y87/V8 steering rack?

    The 14.x one.

I checked the Technical Database but couldn't seem to find it.

In order to upgrade to the tighter ratio, this is the only part that is needed, right?

Call TAcreations or HPsalvage and order from them. I'd like to know the price and any other parts you need.

Well, I'm doing this work on my steering because I have play in the wheel that is caused by old, worn-out parts. So I want to use new parts...

Anyone know the part number? Has anyone actually done this upgrade?

I haven't done the upgrade, but I've replaced tie-rod ends (yeah, big whoop those were), and the rag joint with the Unbalanced Engineering !rag-joint setup. Helped with some slop. I also had the rack off during my tubular K install, and did you know that under all of that grime, it's aluminum and black? Really quite pretty when you clean it up!

So I haven't done the upgrade, but I did have the rack off and back on, and it' wasn't the end of the world in terms of the task. Just be sure to keep track of what your new rack comes with, in terms of tie rods, inner and outer ends, condition of the seals if used, etc. Might also be a good time to go to a manual rack if that's what you're interested in! Or to add a PS cooler.

Edit: BTW, it's easy to say that the play is caused by "old, warn-out parts", but they might not be "inside" your rack -- just gears in there -- , but rather at the rag joint / other shaft part, or the inner or outer ends. Good luck.

FirebirdGT e-mailed me the part number. Its 26044844 for anyone who is wondering. www.gmpartsdirect.com does have a core charge though.

Did you ever install this Stefan?

When putting the LS1 steering rack in do you need to buy the LS1 linkage too?

Not yet... but I guess I'll have to get the LS1 linkage too. Thank you for being a guinea pig. ;)

I have a core rack, i think its that part number.

Took it out of my 1998 Ws6 if anybody wants it.

It made noises, so thats why i replaced it. So i don't reccomend it for a replacement, but if you need a core, i'll be happy to send it wherever for the cost of shipping +$5 for my time.

                    Ryan.
