Do you have to take the weight off the rear to change rear shocks?
Do you have to take the weight off the rear to change rear shocks?
I got a 97 Y87 Camaro RS... I've been told differently everywere I go. Some say yes, some say you don't even have to jack the car up... You just take the bolts off and replace the shock... So whats the answer? Do you have to take the weight off the rear to do this job?
It makes it easier to lift the car up, jackstand the rear, and use the jack to lift the rear up for each shock.
It is possible to change them without jacking the car up. Just unbolt the lower shock-bolt and the rest is done from the interior. Re-compressing the shock for installation could be tricky though...

Shocks normally come new with a plastic tie around & compressing them in the fully-closed position. Once the tie is cut, they open up.
Even if the car is/isn't jacked up, you won't be able to install the shocks in the closed position (with the plastic ties on them) because the rear coil springs are keeping the axles from hitiing the underbody. You'll see what I'm talking about once you're under there.
The shocks can be compressed by hand, but it takes a bit of sweat & muscle to do so.
Not much going on, replaced my Kenwood double din stereo with a Pioneer double din, the Kenwood had problems. Then replaced my power inverter for my reverse...
