car shaking while applying brake

alright i noticed my car has been shaking pretty bad when i brake at higher speeds.. it dosent do it at all when i brake hard at high speeds or when i brake at a low speed.. only right in between.. is it my rotors you guys think or what could possibly cause this? the disk brakes look new... how much$$$?? is it easy to do yourself?

Warped Rotors. Cheap fix is to have them refinished if it is not too badly warped or has not been done before and close to the minimum limit. Or replace them. Good luck!!!

Yup, as mentioned before, warped rotors. Might as well replace the brake pads while you are at it. This is a well-known sign of this problem. Our local Autozone turns rotors for about $10 per rotor. Good luck!

If the pads are in good shape and aren't glazed over, don't get new pads [img]smile.gif[/img]

Turning the rotors will temporarily fix the situation... it will come back and eventually you'll need rotors that are better and won't warp. However, it'll buy you another 30K I'll bet.

I think my rotors are warped, too. My car only has 26,200 miles! Do you think the repair would be covered under the GM bumper-to-bumper warranty? Has anyone had their rotors turned/replaced under warranty?

I dunno how you all distinguish between warped rotors and tires being unbalanced. I thought my rotors were warped about a year ago and was close to buying new ones. Shortly before I was about to buy them I had to replace my tires and when I had my tires replaced the shaking went away completely. How can you guys be so sure what the problem is? I really want to know how to tell the difference.

Warped rotors only shake under braking. It's hard to explain, but you can almost feel the pads making more contact with parts of the rotor. Gives a feeling almost like your modulating the brakes slightly or the road under you is really bumpy.

Rotors warped on my 2000 Camaro at 13,000 miles (no track use AT ALL) and at 25,000 again (1 session of racing at around 20,000). Had them cut at the dealer under warranty the first time and sold the car as they were starting to the second time (could feel it every so often).

Front rotors warped BAD on my 2002 TA at about 17,000 miles (heavy track use). When I spun the wheel freely, I could actually feel and hear the rotor making contact with the pads and then not. Just replaced them with Autozone ones and all the brake shimmy has gone away. Hopefully these won't warp.

I'm almost certain my rotors are warped since I can feel them grab harder on certain spots...

...would warped rotors give me less braking power? It seems my braking power has decreased. I'm hoping it isn't my master cylinder though sometimes the pedal does go in further than other times.

Sometimes the pedal feels good, sometimes it doesn't. How much would a new master cylinder run?

Well, brakes are usually considered wear items like pads, rotors, belts, tires etc.
I think that might only be 1 yr, 12,000 miles

i replaced my rotors at 12,000 and 26,000 miles, and the pads at 26,000. our stock rotors suck, period. you probly have warped rotors, but, If ur brake fluid is low, it'll do that to you too cuz of the air bubbles that might get in there. have both thr rotors and fluid checked out. a good upgrade for our cars: Baer eradispeed rotors w/ EBC green stuff brake pads and stainless steel lines. you can go w/ other stuff, but I think these are the best components u can buy w/o getting a whole new brake system.
