i switched from 235/55r16 all around to 245/50r16 just on the rear. will this throw off my speedometer, etc? thanks!

Yes, you will be going a little slower than you think you are, and the distance you travel will be a little bit less. Try google search and look for a tire size calculator. It should be ok if you have the same brand and model of tires on front and back. If not, it will likely get squirrely when beyond the limits of traction for one of the pairs of tires. You could go 245/45/16 all around and lower the car 1/2" and improve gearing by about 7% at the same time. Bad for gas mileage on the highway, but good for acceleration and handling, usually. The same is true for the 245/50/16, but to a lesser degree.

ok... how can a new set of tires throw off the speedo? I have the same 235/55/16 and I am looking to get some new tires (they came with Y87). I looked on tiretracks.com but couldn't figure out what the 55 means - 235 is width, 16 is tire size, so far that's all I know [img]smile.gif[/img]\'96 dark green V6 Firebird<br />Y87 Performance package<br />front license plate with silver firebird insignia<br />alpine CD deck<br />T-top<br />Tinted windows @ 27%<br />low mileage (just broke 45000 not long ago!)<br /><br />waiting for first performance mod :)Comment

Your speedometer is calibrated to a certain tire size. A taller tire will make less revolutions than a smaller one in the same distance. The 55 in the tire dimensions in the height ratio of the tire. The overall diameter of the tire is so close to the original that you have nothing to be worried about.
Overall diameter of 235/55/16 is 664.9mm and on 245/50/16 it is 651.4mm. So, the difference is 1.35cm which equals to about 1/2".
235 = width of the tread in millimeters
55 = aspect ratio = height of the sidewall is 55% of the width of the tread
16 = rim size in inches
