  • 255-50's or 245-50's?

it's time for new tires. 1 of my kumho's is down to the tread bar, and another 1 is close to it. I was wondering what the gains would be going from a 255-50 to a 245-50, or if I should just stick w/ the 255-50's next time? i know 245's are smaller in width, so less traction possibly, but they have 1/4 inch shorter sidewalls than the 255-50's, so they'll actually lower the cal a little and less sidewall helps handling, and the smaller diameter give me higher gearing for better acceleration, and less rubber mean less weight, yada yada yada. I want all ur opinions please. lemme know whatcha all think.

You won't see any noticable performance differance from 255 to 245. I had 245s but got some 255 Kumhos and prefer the 255. Wider profile tires just look better on f-bodies.

I agree. I have the 255 Kumho's on now, but I'm gonna go with the 245's when I need new ones later on. I had 245's and 255's installed already, and can say there really isn't any noticeable difference too, except that the 245's are cheaper. Saving $$ is good!

Get the 245/50 711's, they're decent enough for all kinds of use, I drag'd on them, autocross on them ...

Your speedometer would be more accurate with 255's (I think it's .3% one way or the other if you still have stock settings), if that would factor into your thought process.

I have a HPP3 so I'm not worried about it being off.

What size wheels do you have?
              I have 245/45x17 Kumho's on 17x9 ZR-1 rims.
The 245's are a little too narrow for 9" rim.
Next time I'll get 255's to fill the rim better.

stock size rims right now, and i'm hoping to keep the tires in 1 piece till i can afford rims and tires, but i dunno if they'll last that long.

I noticed a lot more sidewall flex with the 255's over the 245's. I'll be going back to 245's when my current 255's wear out.

With the same brand/model of tires?

I can see how changing the brand/model would affect sidewall flex a lot, I'm surprised that just a small size change would do that.

That would be because the 245-50's have 1/4 inch less sidewall between the rim and the ground. I noticed less flex when I went w/ 255-50's over the stock 235-55's. maybe it was cuz kumho's are made stiffer than goodyears. any more opinions?

Unfortunately yes... both Kumho ECSTA Supra 712's. I'm not impressed at all with the looks or performance of the 255's over the 245's. I think my next set of tires will be the Kumho 711's in 245/50 size.
