• PSI to keep in Sumitomo 245/45ZR17

hi guys, i have a set of sumitomo 245/45ZR17 HTR+ tires on my car. I was wondering what PSI I should keep in them, the max PSI rating for them is 60PSi however I keep them at 40PSI, my friend says that the rear tires should be kept at a lower PSI, but I don't know what to think about that. I've had the tires ever since last august 02 however the rear tires are starting to wear really badly in the middle. I keep a check on the PSI levels every week. I was wondering what some of you guys do to keep your tires in good conditions and which PSI ratings i should use. I haven't rotated the tires yet, im afraid to because the front ones are in really good condition and I don't want them to get worn out like the rears. I'd appreciate it if only those who knew a lot about these types of situations reply. I don't want to be given the wrong advice.

    Thanks, Ted

If the center tread (only) of your tire is wearing out, you're running too much pressure.

40psi is a lot for street driving.

I run mine at 36, and that's higher than most people. A lot run at 30-32.

The max psi on the tire doesn't really have any relation to how much pressure you should run in them for your car.

Thanks guys, i definatley had the wrong idea then for some reason i thought the max psi effected what kind of pressure you put in. Thats why I decided 40 seemed adequate. I changed all of them to 32psi now. It feels a lot better and calmer driving. After almost a year of having the tires should I do anything special. I guess I should have them checked on. Rebalanced, rotated, alignment.

        Thanks guys!!!

Rotate and balance sounds like a plan!

tirerack said to run my 245 40 18's at the same pressure the eagle GA's are, does that sound right?
