  • Swapping Rear End..have ??? on breaks

I just got a '97 Z rear end. Putting it into a 96 Camaro V6. My car has drum and ABS with sensor in the carrier, the new rear end has Disc brakes with ABS wheel sensors. The ABS plug is the same but mine uses two pins while the new one uses four pins, what will happen if I hook it up? Also, Switching from Drum to Disc will I need to change the proportioning valve? Mine has one brake line to the rear-end going into a junction block, the new one had two brake lines from the valve to the rear end. Thank for the help.

Didn't you ask the same question here:HELP!!!! ;)

As far as the plug goes, I am guessing that two of the wires are for one sensor, and the other two are for the other sensor. Your original plug only has two wires because there is only one sensor. So hooking your connector up, assuming the new sensors send the proper signal, would result in you substituting one wheel speed for the the original carrier speed. That could cause some issues when braking around corners as the wheels will travel at different speeds than the carrier would. Might trip the ABS when there is no need to or vice versa.

As far as the proportioning valve, I have read that they are different, but that it isn't necessary to change when doing the swap. For the brake lines, you could pay someone to bend you some new lines, or make a t-fitting to attach to the dual lines and allow for a single input, or buy lines from a non-TCS rear. Or you could see if you hard lines from the drum rear will fit. I don't think they will as the drum lines are hard all the way up to the backing plate, while the disk lines have a flexible end to them.

In fact, the easiest fix for you would be to buy the correct type of rear end in the first place. Did you order the rear, or buy it locally? I would see if you could exchange it for the appropriate type as that should correct all your problems. If you can't exchange it, post on the V8 boards, those guys are always blowing up rear ends and you could probably sell it there and then buy a new one for you application. Remember to ask for a rear from a non traction control car.

HAhah i kno i already posted something really simular to this question. I just didn't know what i should do about the pins. Is there a way were i can juss not hook it up and not have ABS in the back? And why would it be the wrong rear end, the guy said the Z i got it off of didn't have traction...or at least he claims it not to have traction...But you think i am kinda screwd over with this rear end?

If you have wheel speed sensors at each wheel, and separate brake lines for each side without a T joint on the axle, I am almost positive it is a TCS rear axle.
