• Lightweight K-members now available for 3.8's

In all of his infinite wisdom, Rob decided to approach BMR about designing a lightweight k-member for the 3.8 V6's. BMR decided to follow his advice and viola.. There is now a lightweight k-member for the 3.8l V6's. Go to: BMR and then go to the bottom of the page and look for the k-members. Ignore the 97-02, it was done and test fit on a 96 (mine !). The price listed is 439.95. It weighs 24.5 lbs. which, I can tell ya from experience is a LOT lighter than the stock one. Not to mention a hell of a lot better access to surrounding engine accessories.

Hmmm, I've been running my P&A racing mild steel drag k member for just over 6 months.
I bought one for an lt1 and it fit perfectly.
What was done different to make it an official 'v6' k member?
I also added light weight mild steel lower a arms.
At the time P&A did not have the uppers but now they do.
Sooner or later I'll buy the uppers to match
I also added a manual steering rack too at the time.
In the lounge and/or drag racing section there are posts on it. If you want more info do a search to the winter/spring of theis year under my name

Well.. From what I saw when Rob took the stock k-member out, is, compared to his stock one, there is a big difference in mounting area's between and LT1 and a 3.8 V6. The v6 mounting points are much closer to the back of the member than the LT1's.. Could you post pics of your k-member installed in the car? If I can find the pics, I'll post the difference between the two.

From what Rob has told me, a lot of people running around on P&A's k-member, have had problems of them cracking... That's just what I've heard him say.. BMR has upper and lower control arms also, poly, or spherical bearing mounts. Rob helped them with the upper spherical's also. He also helped in the development of the LT1's k-member.

YMMV, JHMO.. yada yada yada.

I heard about the cracking also, but it was the chrome moly k members used on the street.
The mild steel are supposed to be fine.
Take a look in the link in my sig, there are some pics of it installed on my bird.

All in all the k member looks bad *** right!!!!
I sometimes feel sad that people can not see mine, it is sooo pretty :D
Yeah, if you have some pics that would be great.
Thanks for posting the info though

You can see the picture of the K-Member on BMR's website (scroll to the top, and click on link).
You can click on it to get a larger image.
The steps,..... make sure to support the engine/transmission while you're taking off the old K-Member, unbolt it, take it out of the way, and bolt up the new K-Member. I believe those are the only steps you need to take. If you want specific instructions, e-mail rob at robshawk@cox.net
He'll help you out.

How much weight does this shave off?

Is the care still re-liable enough for daily use?

Do a search for these things in the lounge and drag racing section.
I posted the whole weigh reduction numbers.

Daily driver, get mild steel only, not chrome moly.
I've heard chrome moly is too strong and will not flex at all on the street.

Since Rob has had his BMR tubular K-Member for quite some time now, I'll sort of use his car as an example. The K-Member is just as strong as the stock K-Member. You can drive the car every day without worrying about it. Since I don't know what the stock K-Members weigh, I can only make the following comparison; When I tried to pick up the stock K-Member off the floor, I was only able to do it with both hands, still struggling a bit. The lightweight K-Member (all of 24.5 lbs) I was able to pick up with one hand, or even lifted it with just two fingers no problem. I hope that helps to give you an idea, in case you don't find the weight of the stock K-Member. How does it look on the car? Certainly looks far better then the stock one, and makes changing spark plugs so much easier. Its kind of a pointless "appearance" mod since you can only see it from underneath the car, so I'd suggest you buy it for it's function rather than looks. ;) ;)
