  • Wheel adapter

    I want to use wheels that are a 5-112 bolt pattern on my 97 camaro (5-120.65 I believe). I've seen wheel adapters in different thicknesses I don't want the wheel to stick out from the wheel well or be to far under. I don't want to change my speedo or anything either it says they come with Yokohama AVS ES100 tires and they're 18" rims. I'd like to lower my car 1, 1.5" as well. Where can I get wheel adapters? how good/safe are they? how much do they weigh?

    Done properly they are safe.

      I don't consider wheel adapters safe. I'd pick a wheel that fits, or none at all.

        They have wheels that fit it's just Ebay, rims and tires have pretty horrible resale value so its possible to get some nice rims without breaking they ol' pocketbook trouble is many are not in the proper bolt pattern.

          Dominic, I am simply replying with my opinion, so please do not take offense; this is not a flame or retort against you!

          If you get a well machined wheel adapter that is not incredibly wide, there is not reason they will be unsafe. Wheel adapters are better than wheel spacers, and I have done the math to prove that spacers are safe, provided they are not too thick. A wheel adapter will put your tires farther out, so be sure to get an alignment. And be sure to install them properly! If there is not enough thread on the stud, don't do it! Common sense will be your biggest safety factor with something like this.

          Also, the adapters are not altogether cheap either. It would probably be just as cost effective to get the proper rims for your application, so think about that first!

            Well, I can tell you that dad has had spacers on his S10 for a few years now. I don't think adapters would be any weaker than the spacers on his truck. We've hauled several vehicles and trailors loaded with post timber. The truck has went through several 4,000 rpm clutch dumps too. The spacers have been on for over 3 years and over 45,000 miles. The spacers have held up great, and we've never had any problems with em.

              Spacers won't necesarily make the tires stick out.
              It depends on the offset of the new wheel.
              More offset could actually make it further in!
              You've got to account for the rim width, offset, and adapter thickness.
              I feel that quality adapters are not bad when used properly.
              Also watch for hub-centricity, that's the diameter of the center hole. If the adapter, or the wheel doesn't fit tight on the hubring, you'll have problems.
              Bottom line; Stay away from wheels that weren't designed for your car unless you are ready to do some serious research.
