I know a guy who is selling his rear brakes (ebrake cable, calipers, rotors) from his 98 Z. I think if i remember correctly that the brakes changed from 97 to 98. Would these bold up directly to my 96? anyone know?

The position of the caliper is different alltogether form 93-97 to 98+.
The 93-97's have the caliper mounted towards the rear of the car, where the 98+ has the calipers mounted towards the front of the car.
I believe you would need the caliper mounting brackets, and possibly the rubber (flexible) brake lines with all of the stuff you are getting from your friend. Other than that, it sounds like it'll bolt right up...

NUTS! You just missed an auction on ebay. The guy was selling the 93-97 disk brake conversion for $200, everything included.
I don't think he sold it, so keep your eye out for it to be posted again.
