  • I don't know? this sound is makeing me insain.

Hey folks, I have a question about a problem that has me lost.. I am hereing a noise from either the right rear or underneath rear of my car. Its a rumbling type sound,(almost like if my tires wernt balanced, but they are... I also noticed my right rear wheel looks crooked. Like its angled wrong or something. I havent hit anything and as far as I know ,my allignment is okay, I just had it done about 3 weeks ago. Also I thought it was the new tires I had put on,but I got only two,and their on the front.. Maybe my wheel bearing is dead? any ideals, I kinda would like to have an ideal before I take it in the shop and get jacked ... thanks gman211203

You could have a bent axle shaft, a bad outer or inner bearing, or something wrong with the tire, like a broken belt or seperated tread.

An easy first step would be to rotate your tires and see if the noise moves.

Yes, if you move tires around and the noise moves with them, it should be fairly easy to determine which one is bad by where the noise moved to.

To check for a bad carrier bearing, pull the differential cover. If you have a bad bearing there'll probably be a lot of metal shavings trapped on the cover, it'll look like something is growing there. You'll actually have to remove the caps to see which one it is.

To check for a bad axle bearing, take the wheel off the side you suspect, remove the center pin from the differential and C-clip from the axle, then pull the axle out a few inches. A bad bearing will usually leave scoring on the axle shaft.

okay thanks.. and i think it might be the bearing cap, the two nuts on my t/a differential cover have been leaking alot and someone also told me the other day, that when i was going down the road,it looked like my rear wheel was wobeln some. I am gona go to the shop this weekend and just let them have at it. Now I can't pay the three tickects i have pending.. Damm camaro, always drawing attention...

If your wheel is acutlly wobling in the rear your axle shaft is probally bent. Its very easy to replace.

I just bought a used axle shaft for like 30 bucks and put it in like 30 mins vvery EASY.

you might also be able to find the nois by lifting the rear tires off the ground, with it in nutral, and just spin the rear tires by hand,. listen to see if its a wheel bearing, or if its comeing from the diff.
