• Z-rated standard on v6s?

My friend is making a big deal bout his "z-rated" tires for his lexus costin him $250 each tire and how big and bad they are. Aren't Z-rated standard on V6s Camaros? I kno my bro and I went to pick up new tires at a GM place and they were the same for his Z28 as my V6, so I guess I just have z-rated? I couldnt find info on them being standard from factory.

it will tell u on the tire itself if it is Z rated. where it says like 235 75 some letter, than size of rim. most likely there not Z rated on a V6. mine wasnt, until i got 17's put on.

It doesn't really matter unless you're going to go fast enough to really use them. I had a friend with an I-ROC that had Z rated tires. He wouldn't shut up about them until he saw my taillights . Then I was like " Yeah, H rated. 130mph bi*ch!"

If you cant go that fast why pay extra for them?

That's hilarious! I really agree with the second thing though, we have 115mph limiters so why buy something rated higher until you can go faster?

I hope he got some lube, $250/tire is expensive as ****. My friend didn't even spend that much on his Yokohama Piratas. I paid just over $100 a tire for my Z rated Kumho 255s.

BTW V6s didn't come with Z rated tires standard, hence why we have 115 speed limiters.

EDIT: I got Z rated tires for their wet weather traction rating. One of the best investments for my car, it's rock solid in wet weather.

I only paid $69 each for my Z rated tires. I bought them for the price, not to say.. "My car is fast cause I have Z rated tires!" - LOL

I'm pretty sure you can get a V6 from the dealer with Z rated tires....those with these tires don't have a speed limiter (governor). I paid $250/each but my tires are also 275's and Potenza S03's.

The Z-rated cars have a 155mph limiter, and if you take your 115mph limited car to the dealer with Z-rated tires most will move the limiter up to 155mph.

Ws6 cars come with Z standard as well, and the 98+ SS/Ws6 had the Good Year F1's on them to my knowledge.

Couldn't you look at your tires to tell if they are Z or not.

I personally have H tires. I drive quite a bit...don't need Z tires if I won't go that fast so why have them wear out faster too?

Read the sticker on your door panel, it will tell you the stock tire, probably 235/55/R16 for your V-6. The V-8s come with 245/50/ZR16s I think, dont own one, cant be sure.. This second tire also fits the V-6 rim perfectly. With its better wet traction & feel for the road, not to mention looks, is a great aftermarket tire mod for your 6 and opens a whole world of patterns & prices.. Called a "plus one" at the tire shop because it is one size larger than stock keeping with the stock rim. A good point to remember when buying a used car is the tires are probably larger than stock before it came into your hands so it is always a good idea to check the stock size before going larger, this is all with the stock rim. I said it, stock rim, 17-18-19-20's, a whole nother story.

Honestly, don't you think people would do this if it were true? I've never ever heard of this happening with V6 Fbodies.

                              [bbzzztt!] -- wrong.

i fell for this when i first got my car. there was a story told to me by one of the service guys there that was pretty cool. he told me that there was some guy that bought a camaro from the dealership (like a 94-95 model) and brought it back a few months later and had the speed limiter removed cause he got Z rated tires.

I thought...SWEET! (this was when i got my car in March of 96) what a way to get rid of the crappy speed limiter. so i thought, no big... went and priced Z rated tires...they cost a fortune..but i thought, if it'd work. so i went back to the dealership and asked the service manager if i needed to make an appointment to have the limiter removed...

he looked at me like i had three heads. first he laughed, then replied "we dont do that kind of thing. the speed limiter is there for the protection of the car/engine. its because the engine in your car cant handle more than 130 mph, so the tires put on your car can go enough to get the car to a good speed, and nothing more." (stupid excuse but thats what i was told by a service manager)

"so even if you got Z rated tires, it would be a waste on your v6 cause the engine will never handle it the way it is." - says the man. (car was stock at the time)

i was like..hrm.. so i went and talked to my buddy in the service area and he looked up the specs on the model. turns out it was a Z28 - 1994, bought without Z rated tires, and a speed governor. when brought back in with z rated tires, the limiter was removed. but i guess they dont do that for the 6 since it cant handle it. (mind you i have a 3.4 and its stock top speed with tranny and gearing is 130 mph. the 3.8 can probably handle a little more...but still -- )

anyway. i doubt they will ever do that for anyone.
