  • Filling the wheel well

So i have stock 16 inch rims that are rapped up in 235/55-16s. I want to upgrade to a 17 inch rim to fill the well nicer and just have a nicer rim, i am going to change to the black 17inch Z06 rim. So i decided on a 17x9.5inch rim with a 275/40-17 tire.
I went ahead and i checked on the tire hight of the two tires, and the 16s tire is 26.2 inches tall while the 17 is only 25.7 inches tall, a half inch shorter. Doesn't that mean that not only is my car going to be lower, but the wheel well will be filled less? Can someone explain this to me if i am wrong?

I calculated the same numbers. The only larger section height tire tirerack has is a 275/55/17, which would likely be too big with a total height of 28.9". You could always do a 285/40/17 but that is only 25.9". I do think most people with 17s are running 275/40/17s.

Well the 285 would be bigger, but correct me if i am wrong, a 285 won't fit on a 9.5 inch wide rim. From my understanding a 275 is even pushing it.
And a 275/55 is going to have a HUGE side wall, so i think i would only use that on the rear tire, something that thick couldn't be to smart to use on the frount.

275/40/17's will fit nicely on the front. Anything wider and you'll start to have rubbing problems. As for the rear, you can go as wide as 315's, but you'll have to do some fender-lip rolling. 285's on the back shouldn't be a problem though.

I've said this before but my 17x9.5 with 275/40 will rub the bumpstops when fully un-loaded, I just grinded them down, and got an adjustable panhard.

ive got 17x9.5 z06 rims with 275's in front and 285's in back. no rubbing problems at all with 4 people in car and full audio gear in trunk. 285's are the max size for 9.5.

The only time I had a rubbing issue with the rear is when I first installed the 274-40-17's and the springs were worn out. I replaced the rear springs and they haven't rubbed since. I've had the car loaded with 4 people too and no probs...

275's in the front? That would probably effect your turning radius a lot. The biggest I would EVER put on the front is 245's on a F-Body. If you notice, Super Cars don't even hardly go past 265.
