  • hub assembly replacement

i took my car up the friendly local gm dealership yesterday to have my wheel looked at. i was pretty sure the bearing was going and it needed a new hub assembly. i stopped back there after school and they said the part would be $304.05 and $100 in labor. i nearly passed out when i heard, but before i left i made sure to get the part number from them. i get home, go onto gmpartsdirect and enter the parts number. $152.08. it's not covered by my warranty either of course, but i did call the place i bought the car from and they were going to look into a replacement assembly for me. even if it's used, as long as i don't have to pay for it and it works. and i am never taking anything to the local gm shop again. $65 an hour and the local one-man shop charges $30 or $35/hour, and he's a nice guy. how can they charge so much for parts?

i called the dealer back this morning and he said he worked it out so that he'll pay for the part and the labor and i only pay $100. only thing is i have to drive about 75 miles to the dealership. hopefully with no problems.

An aftermarket hub is $100 new from Advance. It takes about 20 minutes to change out a front hub. You take off the wheel, remove 4 bolts, remove the brake caliper and rotor, disconnect the ABS plug and beat out the hub from the back of the spindle. Save yourself the trip. That guy isn't doing you any favors, he's probably getting the part for less.
