  • Drag Tires.....a "real" question

Ok so everybody knows about BFGs, Nittos, and Yokos, no big deal. What about a Kumho VictoRacer V700 in a 265/45/16? I know these are road race tires but tirerack will shave them down from 6/32nds to 3/32nds, which i am asuming should be better for using them as a drag radial. The reason I would consider these is that they are wider (265 which should fit ona 16x8) and according to my calculations will actually be about .8 inches shorter overall diameter than a stock size 235/55, which cant hurt for acceleration. So whats your opinions? Will these even get traction comparable to a Yoko or Nitto D/R? Is the 265 gonna fit? Should you get them shaved? Should i just shut up?

    Edit:heres a link

i like the shut up idea..

i dont think taht 265's will fit myself and why would you buy new tires and then get the tread taken off of them?

    thats seems gay to me

Well Jeff, your not giving much substantiation for your claims. You dont think a 265 will fit, well I do, anybody done it? I dont think a wide sidewall would de detremental in straight line. If you were on the road that overhang might have a tendency to want to roll, but these are drag tires. And as for shaving them, you wanna get as much contact patch as possible...but then again you knew that right? And by the way I acknowledge your "smiley" that might indicate your joking, but i really do want to see if anybody has some good input here.

i was jokin but im pretty sure 265 wont fit..im prolly wrong so someone prove me wrong..i think the biggest size that fits is 255..

and no way in hell i would pay to have my tires shaved when i can do that myself :D

        anyone else out there?

Everyone is running Nittos for a reason. They are the best.

I just got the Nittos and they are awesome. They have really good traction, much better than normal street tires. I have heard that the bf goodriches have better traction, but they don't last as long as the Nittos. I wouldn't buy shaved down street tires, they aren't made of the same kind of rubber and no matter how much you shave them it won't change that. The 265 will probably fit, but I wouldn't go over 255 because its not recommended and I haven't heard of anyone go over 255.

The reason people use drag radials instead of road racing tires is because of the "wrinkle wall" designed into the drag radials. The walls of the tires tend to stretch or flex a little when torque is applied to the tire. Road racing tires have a much stiffer sidewall to handle the lateral G-forces placed upon them in the corners. You'll probably grip to the point (with RR tires) that you'll have serious wheel hop issues. :(
