  • A Different Rotor Question

I got some new Brembo's & Hawk's in a few days ago. The Brembo's aren't finished or anything fun like that. I wanted to know if it was OK to clear coat/paint black then clearcoat ( my BMW friend suggested this ) the rotors, just so they do not rust over after I put them on and use them. Do you think it would be ok since my pads would just strip off the paint once I touch the brake pedal? Or would painting them not be good since the rotors are brand new and have never been put on a car?

( I'm thinking like warping problems since you have to break them in along with the pads. Mabye I could mask off the contact path and paint the rest? )

Personally, I'd mask off the contact path beforehand.

My rotors are powdercoated, but weren't painted over the contact surface. I'd just mask it off.

paint and clear the whole thing.. even the surface area.. then just take them to a shop and have them turned.. if they do it right it wont take off but a very very small fraction of the metal.. mostly just removing the paint from the surface area

Hm. Well, i'll prolly just mask off the contact path and clear them then.

Quick question though... aren't the rotors coated in machine oil to keep them from rusting while they sit in the box? Painting over oil is not a good idea...

If they are covered in oil from the factory (most are) just spray a little 'parts / brake cleaner' on them first.

I replaced my rotors with brembo cross drilled, and they came with the glazed finish on them, i used brake parts cleaner to clean them off and ive had them for 6 months or so... I have no problems with them rusting or warping.. they still look brand new.
