what would be the cost and effort/time to replace the drum brakes with disks? what parts and tools would that require?

Depends on what you want to do.
>If you just want disk brakes, then look on ebay for the "disk brake conversion kits". They run about $150-$175, and come complete with everything you need to transfer your drums-to-disk's.
>If you want a whole posi setup, then again, go to ebay and look for a complete rear from a V8 camaro or firebird. I see you have a 1997 Firebird...Get a V8 rear from 93 thru 97. It will fit perfectly without any modifications. Just be sure to get the "emergency brake cables" for the disk brakes.
>As for tools; You'll need two jackstands, one or two hyrdaulic jacks, a good set of metric and standard sockets, another friend to help, a day to kill, and a case of beer.
