Power steering pump again!!! What upgrades? better pump, cooler?

Alright guys, my pump is whinng a little recently and it got alot louder during the autocross yesterday. I have randomly noticed the fluid coming out the top of the resovoir.

Pump isn't dead yet still works but its not perfect. So I do have some time. But it was GM replaced less then 6 months ago for one that whined and crapped out on me, wouldn't work under 3500 rpms.

Car has ~45k, and sees light to moderate autocross duty.

I did run it hard yesteday, 3 regular runs and 6 fun runs(did pretty well to but didn't place, got beat by the points winner last year for the class, and 3rd for overall for the club, and an Evolution driving school instructor and I came in 3rd)

What shoudl I do? Power steering cooler? If so what kind. Upgraded pump, I have seen links to one before, also any side effects of this pump, does it look sound and feel like a stock pump? Some hos get a different sized pulley for my pump to get it to spin more?

Don't know looking for suggestions.

I actually read that post in a search...

Thing is I see it somewhat inconclusive. 2 people reccomend more flow and one guy reccomends less flow. Polar opposite.

I believe I can run a power steering cooler, but not 100% sure. I'll check into it, I mainly just go with a local club, their rules are similar but different from SCCA.

BTW I am running 275s up front, I am sure that is part of the reason.


Also any tips for flushing the system?

There's a stock p/s cooler on some 5.7's that splices into the bottom radiator hose. I found a used one that looks great on ebay for around $25. an option.

The thing about flow, is that there is a bypass valve in the ps pump. When the pump is turning high rpms, it's going to produce too much pressure. So the bypass valve lets the fluid recirculate inside the pump.

Since the fluid never gets out of the pump, it can't cool off. Plus pressurizing the fluid heats it even more. So the same hot fluid keeps getting pressurized and recirculated in the already hot pump thats bolted to the hot engine block.
