Ok so this is kind of a gen. tech ? but I thought of putting it in appearance b/c I think a lot of people in there would be knowledgable on the subject. Then I realized that im only asking the ? to sound smart when someone else asks me the ?, so since its not that important I put it here, so feel free to comment if you so desire. here it is:

How much, if all, do 18" rims affect performance as opposed to smaller rims; and do lighter tires or rims make any difference?

Smaller/lighter rims help.
heavy 18" rims will slow you down...
Think about it, you have a heavier tire so your motor has to work harder to get it moving etc

yeah, but how bad are we actually talking, like losing 25hp or 5 miles to the gallon, or what, anybody actually know?

More importantly to the effect of weight on bigger rims is the "gearing affect"

An 17 or 18in. rim makes the car with 3.23s feel like it has 3.08s, since it the rim itself has a largercircumference.

Not only that since most rims that big, usually have short sidewalled tires they spin hte launch more do to the extra stiffness of the smaller sidewall. Not much room to flex.

But the tire still has the same circumfrence. The larger rim has more interia and will take more to get started moving.

13" wires with 315's will be the best performance combo out there.

Not sure about the best... but would be nice for autocrossing Though, downside might be that you woudl have to convert to toyota echo brakes...

(who the hell has 13 in rims anymore?)

Dan to answer your question on having lighter wheels....

100lbs = about 10hp or 1/10 off your quarter mile times.

IF you use heavier combos you will see a very slight difference. I had ZR1 vette wheels with 17x11 and 315/35/17's on the rear. That combo is around 60lbs for each wheel and tire compared to the stock 44-48lbs per wheel and tire.

The slight increase in weight did feel like you had something in the trunk. Not to much heavier but enough you can feel it. I also had noticed you will stop by the pump a little more often. You may see a slight decreas in mileage.

Lighter wheels and tires will have the oposite effect, and can be usefull when doing racing of any type.

From my experience Bogart racing wheels are the lightest wheels you can get, and Toyo tires are usually one of the lighter street tires you can get.

That's just my 2 cents... hope it helps!!

;)
Thanks,
JAM
02 Firebird GT
