  • changing drums to discs

I am about to get a lsd rear with 3.42. I currently have the 3.08 one wheel pull drums in the rear. My ABS INOP light is always on so my ABS doesnt work anyways. If i dont worry about the ABS how hard is it to change the drums to discs? I have read viper's guide on this but am still not totally sure.

I did it about a year and a half ago, when i just started learning about doing this stuff. It was really that hard just have intructions and the tools.

If you're swapping the entire rear end just make sure it comes with the e-brake cables, and of course calipers, rotors, etc. If your car does not have ASR then try to get a rear from a car without ASR also. Otherwise you'll have to cut fittings and flare brake lines.

There's a special tool to disconnect the cables from the bracket in the drive shaft tunnel, but you can get it apart without it, just a bit of a pain.

Check your ABS sensor connectors. If just one comes loose it will set the light.

Well on another thought, could i just get a differential or chunk or whatever that is a 3 series lsd and get some 3.42 gears and get someone to hook it up to the rest of my rear?

Yes, you could just get a limited-slip carrier and the gears but you'll pay more to have someone install them. The rear swap you can do with a little help and some tools.

Don't forget reprogramming for the gear change. You have an automatic, correct?

the abs problem doesnt lie within the disks, its with the gears. when you get a new diffy you need the rec. ring to go with it. that will take care of the abs. drums to disks isnt too hard, especually if youre getting a new rear axle. it should have everything you need allready to go.

Check into that... Doesn't it also go off if you have a brake light out?

As for the swap its easy, I did it on a 94, direct bolt on.
