  • Which brand/model tire for my needs...?

I got some 18"'s that had Nitto 555's on them but the rears were bald so I decided to just replace them all. Found some Bridgestone RE40 runflat's on Ebay used 245/40/18 but 1 ended up being flat and they feel like sh!t. It feels like the tire is rolling over itself or something if you turn even slightly rather then gently moving over it will jerk hard in that direction. Same thing for uneven pavement it "falls" into these grooves or unevenness and it will jerk like mad. They're properly inflated but they just feel horrid. At 40+ if you wiggle the wheel back and forth the car begins to feel like its on ice instead of gripping and pulling back and forth like it would do even with stock pro-stars it begins to rotate on an axis back and forth and randomly looses and reacquires traction. I think the Nittos felt good (hard to tell wheels weren't balanced and they were not on tight).

So anyway with a replacement tire costing $350 a pop not even shipped and with them feeling like sh!t I was thinking about getting something else. I'm not a road racer I may get a turbo kit in the future but reasonable daily driving characteristics are what I'm after good traction, good wet traction, average tire wear (I only put 10k or less a year on my car and its 90% highway).

I was thinking about these, I know they're a sh!tty brand but pricewise they work out. But I don't want to go through another set of sh!tty feeling tires.

I'm just looking for a solution I've got nice 18" rims but only on the front since I had to put stockers back on in the rear.

What width are your rims? If you put 245's on a 9.5" wheel that could explain why they don't feel right.

Also running 2 different profiles like 18's on the front and 16's on the rear could explain the funny handling.

I haven't heard anything about the Nexen's although I've seen them plenty on eBay. For an inexpensive tire Kumho's are supposed to be pretty good and so are those new Fuzion.

They're 18x8 rims. They handled even worse when it was 18's all around on the bridestone felt like the car was going to do a 180* everytime I changed lanes cause the back end would get loose and start coming around and the front would jerk hard into the direction I was turning. And this is on normal driving not auto-cross or something. It always felt like if I ever had to quickly avoid something on the road at highway speeds my car would go spinning out of control.

There is something terribly wrong with either the tires or your suspension then. The car should not feel like it is going to spin out of control simply by changing lanes. Probably the tires since you got them used, maybe a broken cord or belt. Or else they had no air in them. ;)

i put on the new Kuhmo ASX tires 245/40/18 up front 275/40/18 rear and i love them. 245s are cheap but the 275s were a little pricey but they perform excellent in dry conditions and also perform well in rain. i am however putting winter tires that are on my stock rims back on for the snow season

They've got snow traction abilities though, I don't need that. I'd rather have something with better dry/wet traction then minor snow handling ability.

I may try those MX's. I got the dealer to replace the Bridgestone runflat so I've got 3 used and 1 new for those and they run $350 a piece new. Hopefully I can pull $400 or so for the 4 of them and get some new rubber all around. The only thing I liked about the Potenza's though was they had like a rubber lip on them that helped protect you from scratching your rims against a curb.

Fuzion ZRi's in 245/40R18 are $126 each from Tire Rack. The Kumho Ecsta 712's are nearly the same price, $128 each. The MX's are slightly more at $131 each. Too bad they don't make the 711 in that size, they're really inexpensive.
