hmm going from 235/55/16 to 275/40/17 only changes the speedo from 60mph to 59mph? id think it would be more than that

"hmm going from 235/55/16 to 275/40/17 only changes the speedo from 60mph to 59mph? id think it would be more than that"

Thoughts like this are why, while having the calculator is nice, knowing how to do the calculation yourself is much nicer.

Here's how it works for 235/55-16. The tread width is 235mm. The sidewall height is 55% of the tread width. So the sidewal heigh is 129mm. 25.4 mm to the inch, so the sidewall height is 5.1 inches. The diameter of the tire is 2 sidewall heights plus the 16 inches for the wheel or 26.2 inches.

Do the same calculation for the 275/40-17 and you'll get 25.7 inches. So the overall difference in diameter is 0.5 inches in about 26 inches or about 2%. So the speedo is gonna be 2% different and the 275s will read faster (smaller tire).

Not bad, but the dimensions are not to scale. The sidewall height never changes, the picture just gets bigger. Same for the width.

its not like you can tell the difference between 60 and 61 on the speedo anyway.. maybe 60 and 62
