  • rear brake upgrade

Hey does anyone out there know if there's a disc brake upgrade for f-bodys that have drums? I've gotta get better stopping power! :(

The easiest thing you can do is find a rear end out of a Z28. Of the similar generation would be good. You have a '94 just like me. I was able to get a 93-94 rear end. Sent the whole unit to the specialist. Had him verify the condition of the gears being installed (3.42's), install them, make sure the bearings were good, and seal up the diff. with synth fluids.

You will need the e-brake cable. You should change the brakes while the unit is off the car. But after that, it's pretty much R&R. I would recommend having some PB Blaster. This is a great rust breaker for your old rear end.

You will not need to adjust anything on the brake system like the proportioning valve. The (A) generation (93-96) use the same ABS, Proportioning valve and Anit-lock units.

And yes, it does help more than the drums did for braking. But if your looking for brake neck stopping. You should also upgrade your fronts to maximum size.

Thanks! now the hard question. How much? for an istall like that, I'm pretty sure I can get a rearend for $150-200 but the labors usually a killer.

I would suggest that you upgrade the front first and the rear later since most of your stopping power comes from the front brakes. Try getting bigger rotors/calipers, like the Baer or wilwood kits. Many companies sell them or get the covertte caliper/rotor conversion. The rears do make a difference but nothing compared to upgrading the fronts. The rears are a minor upgrade. The fronts are your best bet if your looking for performance. The kits are kind of expensinve depending on which ones you get. The rearend swap is easier and cheaper but doesn't offer nearly the stopping power of the alternatives.
