  • broke my parking brake?

The other day I was parking my car and I yanked up on my parking brake, the handle came flying upward, way past where it normally would have stopped for how hard I was pulling... and it felt as though there was no tension on the parking brake line, because I was able to move the parking brake handle effortlessly...

However when I put the brake off and pulled it on again, it started working normally...

Any ideas as to what happened?

    thanks,
    -Jeff

This happens sometime. It means that the little latch inside didn't catch its no big deal mine does it occasionally too.

My car does the same thing about once every 6 months. I believe the cable "jumps" out of it's "track". It's still connected to the handle though, but with no tension. Release and it returns to normal.

Also if the interior is cool from the A/C being on, the cable inside will rattle/squeak a little.

Car & Driver reported this same problem also and had their longterm test car repaired under warranty.

Wow, funny you posted this. Mine just started doing it. Scared the *** outta me the first time but it seem to work still. Mine does it when i pull up too fast.

Who else besides me holds the button as they pull it? You know, so it wont make clicking sound.

Hehe, I do, I don't know why but I always do. A friend noticed me doing it and said how it doesn't wear the thing that clicks down as fast as just pulling it up and letting it catch.

Yeah, but how can you tell the linkage is out of adjustment if you can't count the 18 clicks???

Happens to me too. All the time. Just pull up slow and not too far.
