Front end noise identified...what to do?

Driving down a road with some bumps I keep hearing a slight rattle (when I hit each bump)type sound (like 2 peices of metal hitting). However, If I hit (even if I bearly hit them) my brakes the nosie would stop. I took off my right front tire and notice the rotor has some play in it. And if I take my hand and hit the bottom of it, it makes the same noise. I had my brake pads replace 15K miles ago. And I had shocks and struts replaced this last december. Other than that no other work on the front.

Is this normal?
Is there a way to fix it?
What to do?

Here's and update, I took it the shop who did my brakes (june of 2003) to look and see what it could be (I did not have time to deal with it this weekend). I asked them to look at the caliper (along with the rest of the front brake system), they said everything is tight. Now I am stumped again...

It goes away if i slightly hit the brakes and comes right back when i release it (once I hit a bump in the road)

Anyone have any thoughts?

Are your rotors warped?

hmm good question, never occured to me to look at that, wouldn't I have hot spots and hear more like a rubbing/grinding noise if they were? I'll get them turned to see if they are warped. At this point I'll look at just about anything.

This is a very distinct *clink* like 2 small pieces of metal hitting each other.

Rotors are not warped....However, here is the problem:


The nipples on the brake pads are so small that when everything is in place the brake pad has a lot of play and the top of the pad is moving back and forth. Anyone have any suggestions? The shop tried some kind of sticky spray, and 3 different pads inclucing dealer pads.

It makes me think that the top of the shocks are not tight to the upper a arm. I had this problem when I installed one of my shocks and it sounds like exactly what you are describing. Did you have shocks done recently?

Shocks and struts were replaced in December (4 months ago)

Nope they were replaced. I took it by a near by chevy dealership with a repair shop today. They said the shocks were installed correctly. I duno I'm at a loss, we put some brake tac (like a glue type of substance made to help hold brakes in place) on them and the noise is gone. I'm still concerned about it though. Let me know if any one has some ideas....

I am still convinced (without actually hearing it) that it was just good ole' break noise. A good shim or some thick brake quite should do the trick. Any good brake job should include this stuff:)
