my car is a basemodel and has 3.08 gears with drum brakes. will I have to change anything when I swap in 3.42s? The 3.42s have disc brakes; what problems would I run into?
Will it be an unbolt, swap and bolt or will things get hairy with the ebrake and regular brakelines?

The main concern will be the speedometer. It will be off because of the gear change.
As for the rear;
Are you going to buy the whole rear setup? If so, stay with the 93-97 setup. The rear "should" come with the disk brake lines attached, and they will bolt right up to your old brake lines coming from the master cylinder (at the center of the rear). You will need two new/used emergency brake cables -for Disk Brakes though.
yep, i would assume cables would be the only thing you need. if the rubber part of the brake line is still attached to the calipers you should be set to connect them up. make sure you bleed them out really well once you get thinkgs finished. some people may tell you that you need a proportioning valve for the brakes, but i have heard on here many times that you dont. my car's brakes work fine without it.
If you're getting a complete rear, just make sure that you get them to include the lines and e-brake cables. As far as staying w/a 93-97, you don't have to as long as you get your 98+ rear from either a Y87 v6 car, or A v8 w/o traction control. With everything included the 98+ bolts right up w/o a problem. Like Loochy said, you just need to bleed the brakes about a million times and don't worry about a proportioning valve, they do work fine w/o one.

ok. my friend put this 3.42 on his 94 and it worked fine for him. he disassemled and threw away the frame, (beyond totalled, the fire wall and floor had metal wrinkles, good demolition car though we had fun) he has the rearend and might trade it too me. would i be better off swapping my drums to it or going with the discs?

I'd go with the disc brakes. Much better stopping power, more reliable, easier to upgrade --- trust me.. Brakes are VERY important.... If you ever plan on making your car faster, you'll want better brakes..

If you replace the whole rear unit, then no. The e-brake cables are a snap...literally. Just hook up the front of them first where they are above the driveshaft, and the lower part near the calipers snap right in.
