• Power steering cooler installed

When I was road racing a few weeks back, I literally boiled the power steering fluid. Losing your steering on a road course is

The cooler is the optional LS1 cooler that mounts inline with the radiator hose. Bought it from gmpartsdirect.com. Install was pretty straightforward:
1. Drain coolant and p/s fluid.
2. Mount cooler in lower radiator hose.
3. Plumb cooler in low pressure p/s return line between rack and reservoir. Hoses set up for cross flow for more efficient cooling.
4. Refill and bleed coolant and p/s fluid.

While I had the coolant drained, I also swapped in a 180F thermostat to replace the stock 195F one. Filled coolant with 20% dexcool in distilled water with a bottle of water wetter thrown in. Power steering filled with Red Line.

Picked it up from gmpartsdirect.com, it was about $95. Part #10417037

The air/oil coolers are definately cheaper ($30-40), but I didn't think they'd work as well - you aren't moving fast or long enough in autox to get enough air over them, this one is full time. I should have taken a picture of the inside too, there's some pretty trick channels like a heat sink to pull more heat out of the oil into the water.

Get the 3/8" transmissiom/oil cooler hose (hot oil resistant), hose clamps from auto part store. Ace Hardware had the barbed tee used to join the hose coming out of the rack with another piece to reach the cooler (can't see this in the picture).

That's true, used ones do pop up every now and then. I wanted new though - there's small passages for the coolant to flow through ringing the main pipe (like a heat sink) that I didn't want to have to clean out if they were clogged. I generally don't ebay much either.
