  • What kind of tires should I get?

I don't really know where this belongs, but I might be getting new tires soon, and I want some good all-purpose tires for daily driving/drag racing that will last a long time, get good traction in the rain/snow, and get good traction on the strip. I've heard BFGs perform well, but wear down really fast in daily driving. Also, do z-rated tires well down more quickly or last longer? I don't know anything about tires. Could some of you please tell me about how your tires have worked out and make a suggestion. Thanks!

You might want to post this in suspension.

If you get a chance, send me an IM and I'll talk with you about it for a while... I'm a big tire junkie.

Ive always used Z-rated becuase i like the look better, Ive used pirella and before that i used goodyear, Pirella sucked in the rain or any slick surface and wore down very fast{like 10k miles} My good years were on the car when i got it and the lasted 20k after, with the same driving stlye i used on the pirellas, Now ive got Dayton Z rated and the grab better than any of the others in the rain and are holding up very well but they have only been on for about 4k miles. So I would not rec Pirella, Goodyear and dayton i would plus Dayton are cheaper than most of the others. Ive also heard good things about Dunlop. Ill try those next.

Z-rated tires will wear quick, but it's also driving style too. wider will keep traction better, and taller will make them last longer.

Here is a good list of tires I've tried and recommend for everything but snow use:
          • Kumho ECSTA 712
          • Kumho ECSTA 711
          • Yokohama AVS ES100 (I'm running these on my Camaro)
          • Kumho ECSTA MX
          • Dunlop SP5000 (I enjoyed these on my prev firebird)
          • Pirelli PZero Nero
          • Bridgestone Potenza RE750
          • Bridgestone Potenza RE950 (These have a 45,000 mile warranty!)
          • Dunlop SP8000
          • Firestone Firehawk SZ50EP
          • BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW
          • Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3
          • Yokohama AVS Sport
          • Michelin Pilot Sport

I listed these in another post, but I figured its worthwhile to mention them here. Any of these will do the trick, some are cheaper than others, but any will work great. I prefer the best bang for the buck tires, and those are the SP5000s and cheaper ($130/tire and less for a 16" tire). If you want something good for cheap, you can't beat the Kumho 711. My personal fav right now is of course the Yokohama ES100 which I'm running now, for under $100 a tire its probably the best tire for the dollar made... not to mention it performs as well as a BFGoodrich KDW according to most tests, and beats it in the wet.

            Im gonna throw in an extranious tire io have been reading ALOT about and i think it may be my next;
It is The Continental Contitrac 245-50-16 it has a 400 treadwear rating and i have read only ONE bad review about it and the guy was comparing it to a Goodyear eagle F1  But for $88 a tire it performs well in all condidtions INCLUDING SNOW !!! I just havent gotten an actuall mileage from anyone yet.

It will either be that tire or the Bridgestone Potenza RE950 it has about the same qualities but not as well in the snow but comes with a 40000 mile treadlife warranty.

Anyone else looked at the continental !?!?!

Thanks guys! I'm leaning toward the Bridgestone Potenza RE950 now, can't beat that warranty.

I really love the potenza re730's...

I havbe the kumho 712's now and i cant stand it.. they are on wider wheels too!.. and they are just not as good.. the are much much worse in the rain.. and the dry its resonalble but.. not even in the re730's league..

re730's are pricy.. but.. worth every penny..

What do you guys think of the Potenza RE910?
there not speed rated great, there H rated, 118mph, BUT they are excellent rain/weather performance tires, with a 60,000 mile warrenty, that will last a long life.

You guys approve of the tread design?

If you're not racing, i.e. drag or anything else, and you put a lot of road miles on your car and want a MUCH better tire than stock thats still partially performance oriented, get the RE910.

The warranty is outstanding, you'll likely get at leat 50,000 miles out of it, and its good in the rain too. Its not directional like the better RE950, but its not a bad tire. Just be sure to run nothing smaller than P245/50R16, I really think that should be the minimum size on these cars.

I still prefer the RE950 over it, even though the warranty is a little less, but I'm more of a performance tire sucker :D

I've had the Potenza RE950's on my car for about 15,000 miles, and they're still looking (and performing) great - I wore out the stock Eagle GA's in 22k miles.

Great grip dry (life in Tucson) and wet (monsoon season, 3" of water on the road). No snow of course :)

I went for the 950 for the higher speed rating - while H suffices for my driving, it won't get the higher temperature rating, and I wanted the A temp rating for driving out here in the desert, trying to keep my tires running cooler.

Can't tell you about drag, but I've been autocrossing on them and I feel they're fine. If I was really hardcore, I'd get some large rims and move up to the Falken's that are all the rage..

If you go with the amazingly sticky Yokohama's, if you ever get a nail in the tire they will replace the tire completely, you just have to pay for the worn off tread, or in some instances they give it to you free. I have Yok's on my car and they are sticky man. :D

Dominic, how does the performance of the Bridgestone Potenzas (RE950, RE730) compare to that of your Yokohamas? Do you use the Yokohamas to drag race? If so, how's your traction (i.e. how high can you launch before losing traction?)

I have the RE910's on my car. They have excellent traction in rain. But If you drive em hard they wear really fast and the tread wear isn't too even. Should I go with a different tire next time guys?? I've only had the car since November so I haven't used any other tire yet.
