17" diameter wheels all around would be better for handling than stock. You could possibly get even better handling using 18" diameter wheels front and 17" diameter wheels in the rear if you can keep the wheel/tire weight about equal to 17" setup.
The Best 'shocks' of the ones you mentioned are the Bilsteins (HD series), but there are much better 'shocks' than bilstein for performance, Koni or Ohlins for example. Stock Bilstein's would be the minimum decent "shock" for performance IMO...

yeah, bilsteins are good. Koni's i believe are better.
You will loose traction going with with 18" diameter wheels over 17" diameter wheels in the rear because of sidewall stiffness. If you put 18" diameter wheels in the front you can increase the responsiveness (because of the shorter sidewall) without sacrificing grip. It might not be 'conventional' but a National winning SCCA autocrosser uses this setup on a C5 Corvette...it does work.
Putting 17" wheels in the front and 18" wheels with a lower profile in the rear and thinking that is better for grip and handling than 17" wheels all around... that's 'retarded'.
Stay with one size front and rear or 1" bigger in the rear, Regard less if 18"F/17"R or 17"F/16"R will work better for auto x, it will look retarted and you will be laughed at. I would never do some thing like that.

Not much going on, replaced my Kenwood double din stereo with a Pioneer double din, the Kenwood had problems. Then replaced my power inverter for my reverse...
