  • Mechanic says "New brakes are Suppose to Squeek"

I got new pads and rotors up front, and It squeeks really bad when I apply the brakes. So I take it back and the guy at the brake place says that the new pads and rotors will do that.

He says that the pads have to settle into the rotors, and when they start to wear, the squeak will go away. He said to let 500 miles to go by, then if it still squeeks bring it back.

I dont fully believe him, because I had my brakes done on my camaro there like 4 years ago, and I know it didnt' squeak. When my mom bought he last car, it was brand new 0 miles, and her brakes didn't squeak. I have never heard of this.

Is this guy full of ****?

You need to season the rotors and bed the pads. Just go out and drive for 20 minutes not using the brakes much...do a medium stop from 70. Drive 5 minutes to cool off the brakes and do another harder stop. Continue this doing harder and harder stops until you just about lock up the brakes or engage the ABS. Drive another 10 miles and let the car sit. Then the brake squeak should be gone. If its not...take them back and have him put some anti-brake squeak on the back of the pads.

Depends on the type of pads. Semi metalic el chepo pads sometimes will sqeek untill after a few miles of break in. The give a ton of friction and dust... but they are in expensive.

Performance pads usually don't have that problem at all, and will stop you just as good or better. Usually without all the extra dust. Again... just depends on type of pads.

            Hope that helps. ;)

My cheep brakes squeek, but that's because I've glazed them many times.

And when you get new brakes you need to let them seat, so for about 500 miles DO NOT do ANY hard braking.

If the pads contain a decent amount of metal, they can squeak pretty bad.

When I bought my car, the brakes were making noise when they were not applied. But when I pressed on the brake pedal, the squeek would disappear. Well I turned the rotors and bought new OEM brake pads. Made sure I used a ton of that anti-squeek goo on the pads. Put everything together and the squeek was a little better. After about 200 miles, it was gone completely.

sounds like he was either too cheap or too dumb to use antisqueek...give em a few miles and it should be all better
