  • ABS INOP Light

My car has recently started showing the ABS INOP light. Some days it comes on as soon as the car is started, sometimes I will be driving for a few miles first before it comes on. Other days it won't come on at all. I have checked the brake lights, and they seem to be functioning fine. The brake system feels fine whether the light is on or not. I have not noticed any increased effort or change in pedal feel. The fluid level is fine as well. Pads still have plenty of material left, both the front discs and rear drums.

I have not yet checked the wheel speed sensors as I am not sure how. Is it simply a matter of checking voltage coming from the sensor with a multimeter with the vehicle at rest? Does the vehicle need to be moving when checking, therefore requiring some sort of scan tool? The random nature of the light coming on really has me puzzled. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You ABS sensor in the differential may be loose. IF it comes on sometimes and not other that is the only thing I can think of. Have you checked your brake fluid lately?

Yes, brake fluid level is fine. The fluid is old, but the level is good. I will have to check my sensors next. I hope it is the sensors and not the abs unit itself.
