Need smaller size tires for rear? Which size do go with?

I bought some rims and tires used from this guy, rears are 17 X 11 and the tires are 315 35's. Fronts are 17 X 9 or 17 X 9.5 with 275 40's I believe. Anyways, the fronts are fine, no rubbing at all, but the rears are starting to get cut up, I came out of a driveway and one of the rear tires got cut up pretty bad because of the steep driveway. There is a little rubbing in corners and all, but going up driveways really is starting to cut the rear tires up pretty bad.

I want to get a smaller tire that won't rub and get cut up. I love the way these tires look, but the rubbing and all is getting annoying. What size tire could I go with that would be smaller and not get all cut up? Will the same size tires I have up front fit on the 17 X 11 wheel?

A 285/40 would fit but that's stretching it. There's not much in between a 285 and 315 size.

Is it rubbing the outer sidewall on the fender lips, or the inner sidewall on the fender well?

Some people who run 315's have to beat the fender well with a sledge to make room for the tires. Make sure your rear seat back is in the upright position when you do this.

It's rubbing on the outer sidewall from the fender lips. I got stuck in some sand one day out in the boondocks and that caused one of the tires to get cut up pretty bad. There's like 3 or 4 spots where it got cut up, the rubbing doesn't do much damage at all, it's the cuts that I'm worried about. Steep driveways and such usually do most of the damage now that I avoid the sand, lol

I just want to go with something I won't have to worry about so much.

Is it on both rear tires?

Yes, both rub. The driver side tire is cut up worse because it's the one that bottomed out when I got stuck.

I bought new bilstein shocks and that helped with the rubbing when taking corners and if I have a passenger in the back, but didn't eliminate it. I'm trying to find a shop now that can roll the fenders, I've been told that will solve my problem.

yeah get the fenders rolled b/c thos 17 x 11's look SEXY!!!!!!!!!

i suggest getting an adjustable panhard rod too.
