The rear shocks aren't hard to do at all! Find out how much they cost to buy, and put them on yourself. Honestly, they are really easy!
It's just as important to replace the front struts if you are replacing the rear. Although you CAN just do one set without the other, I use it as a rule-of-thumb to do all of them at once. Keeps them all matched properly too. Have a shop install the front struts when you buy them. They are a bit more difficult to replace than the rear's.sigpic

No, shocks all around. Third gens had struts up front, fourth gens have shocks. Our shocks mount kinda like struts. So the labor cost is the same to replace as struts, but they're just shocks. Struts ("MacPherson struts") also serve as upper suspension arms. We have double a-arms and shocks.

Well a strut is basically a spring with a shock in the middle... Thats how I think of it at least. It is one of the easier things to do in my mind... why take it in. Make sure you have a good 4-5 hours to do it though, it is time consuming

"is it easy even if your not to good with cars?"
"They (the fronts) are a bit more difficult to replace than the rear's."
A bit more??? The rears are easy, but you have to jack up the car, put it on stands, and work underneath it. Always risky, especially if you're not too good with cars.
The fronts are hard, even for someone who is good with cars. Things tend to be rusted on. The springs are tricky to remove and it can be dangerous.
I'd have someone else do it. I did, and I'm good with cars. :D

That should give you a clue.2000 Firebird convert, chameleon/tan, M5, Y87, TCS, BMR tower brace and panhard, KBDD sfcs, 245/50-16 GSCs

yeah but it wasn't hard... hardest part is holding everything up while you take out the strut....took me 4-5 hours cause it was my first time... now I could shave a few hours. but if he has 98 or newer I think he has shocks...much easier
