• Shaking around 50...

I just bought a 96 Firebird, bone stock with 175k on it. The wheel and shifter (5spd) shakes when going around 50, but when you get up to 60 it'll lessen. I was wondering if this was common with these f-bodies. My dad seems to think it is the result of the dented rims (curbs) and bald tires, which I'm hoping is correct. So is it common for it to do that by the cause of the suspension because of the high mialage?

Get the wheels re-balanced like F1GT said. If that doesn't work, replace tires.
I had an X-G/F that had a crappy ford probe, and the thing shook like crazy. Even after several trips to the tire shop for balancing, they still shook. Replaced the tires once, and it ran smooth as a crappy probe could.

Negative. Get new tires, and then also balanced. And when they are balancing your wheels, ask to watch them, to see if the hop on the balancer, and if they do, then it is the rim that is bent in most cases. But your problem is most likely caused by your tires/wheels. Then, check to see if your shocks are orange in color. If they are, then most likely they are original 175,000 mile shocks. Its time to replace them. Good luck. ;)

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated. I'll be getting new tires along with rims when I get the money, hopefully before I put it on the road next summer (can't drive it as a winter car, that would be crazy here in NY ). Glad it is most likely the tires/wheels, I wouldn't want to mess with the suspension so soon.

OR an alignment. Mine did that. My toe-in was way off.

maybe the alignment, if not the balance

It is like a 1% chance that it is the alignment. If your toe in is that far off to cause vibration, then you are gonna know it by looking at how ****ED up your tires look because of alignmoent wear. It is not the alignment.
