  • stupid power steering...

So I've had some problems with this for awhile now. I've replaced the pump and main hose. It still leaks and makes the typical 'no power steering' noise. Also leaks like a mother half the time. I took it in and asked the guy to diagnose what was wrong. He told me the rack and pinion were f*cked and I needed a new one for a solid 500+ for it all installed. YEAH RIGHT. I told em to hold off and left it at that. I've never heard of blowing the damned rack and pinion. Anyway, what should I do about this?

You can get a life time warranty rack from autozone for $130. If you are mechanically inclined enough to put a new pump on, you can do the rack yourself also.

Unfortunately I will be replacing mine again within the next week or so. Replaced it about 10 months ago and it started leaking about 3 months ago.

I lose about 1/2 a resevoir of fluid a month as it is right now. Mine is leaking at the left seal. It's not uncommon for the seals to start leaking, and $500 might be a little high for a complete install.

Figure about 170ish for the rack, depending on where you buy, about 120-150 labor, roughly 2 hours by shop times. Few bucks for fluid and an alignment. I said that price might be a little high because I'm not sure if they quoted you new outer tie rod ends as well. If they did that price is right about what it should be, if not it's about 75 or so too high.

It's not a difficult task to do yourself if you have a pretty good mechanical knowledge. I did a somewhat write up a little while back in another thread. Didn't have the exacts to all the wrench sizes and such. I rebuild so many frontends on a weekly basis It's hard to keep all the sizes in order. I can do a detailed one if you want when I do mine, minus pictures though(might be able to get a cam). Average skill level I'd say about 2 hours time to do it, but can easily be done with the right equipment in about an hour.

I called T/A Creations a sec ago. Guy was kind of a deushe, said I would need ls1 rack and pinion and the collar (SP) to adjust the difference in degrees. He recommended I stay stock on it. I'm kinda confused?
