  • expensive flat repair

I had a very slow leak in one of my rear tires (goodyear 245/50/16) for a while so today I took it off to go take it to get repaired. Once I got it off, I noticed a roofing nail in the middle of the tread. No biggy so I took it to NTB (national tire battery) and told the guy I wanted him to take the tire off the wheel and use a patch-plug. I came back about an hour later and he said it came to $29.00  I haven't had a tire fixed in a long time but that seems extremely expensive??

The guy said he had to charge extra because I had a wide high performance tire. I won't ever go back.

I think I spent -$10 on a tire plugging kit and plugged 2 seperate tires. Didn't even have to pull the wheel off the car each time.

I get flats on the vehicles all the time on the farm, I've never had any problems with the plug kits.

The extra wide tire thing is a joke. Anyway, don't forget once they pull the tire off they have to balance the wheel again. Thats what they charge around here for that kind of patch job. That shop probably has a high labor rate. Shops around here get about $72/hour.

typically they just mark where the valve stem and the weights are and just put it back on. A lot of the time they don't balance it but that is just my experience.

I probably plugged, ~10 tires in my life and never had a problem with them.

Hell I plugged a rear tire on the way to the strip, spun the wheels and ran it at the track, and never had a problem with it for next few thousand miles afterwards.

when i worked at sears we always rebalanced the tire and put in a new valve stem. 20 bucks it about average nowadays.
