  • Z28 axle swap...and brake complications arising from it...need help!

I got a slight problem with brake lines. (i copied this from anothe rtpost i made on another board, the "94 car" is a 1994 3.4L Camaro 5 speed, rear axle is 1994 Z28 rear with 3.73 gears, and disc brakes.)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am doing a rear disc brake install on the 94 car. I have rotors, calipers, all that jazz, and it it all bolted up on the car. My problem is: the lines that previously ran to the wheel cylinders on the old drum brakes isnt going to work on the new disc brake calipers(the line was steel line all the way to the wheel cylinder). and the new calipers have the same type of rubber hose/fitting as many front brake calipers have. So my question is: is there a way to attach some rubber brake line that would then be able to be attached to the caliper? is there some way to splice a hard line with rubber brake line? I really need some advice on this, the cars been sitting all week liek this

Honestly, you should contact a GM Dealer and get yourself a stock replacement brake line from them, or find a Junk Yard that'll sell you them. Running a rubber line from the center of the rear to the caliper isn't a good idea, and splicing them is TOTALLY out of the question. There is alot of pressure under your brakelines when you just lightly touch them, not counting emergency situations when you stand on them. Splicing them would be asking for trouble, and you would be suprised how fast you would find it.
    That's just my opinion.

ok, so now am i wondering what all you guys that do the Z28 rear axle swap do as far as hooking up the brakes....

the hardline on my old axle went all the way to the wheel cylinders. As of now, they are on the new rearend, and they still have the fittings on the end. So what did those of you who have done the swap do for hooking up the calipers??

On drum brake rears, the metal brake line runs from the center of the rear, directly to the drum brake wheel cylinder.
On disk rears, the metal brake lines run from the center of the rear, to just under the axle before it reaches the wheel, then there is a rubber hose that runs the rest of the way to the rear calipers, to compensate for flex.
If anyone upgrades from drum to disk using the stock drum rear, they need to upgrade the brake lines because they are different. The disk rear I bought came with everything already installed on it, so I didn't need to upgrade anything except the Emergency Brake Cables.
