• Seeking Info On Changing Brakes In 96 Firebird

I was wondering if anyone had a link to a site that had detailed instructions/pictures on how to change out the front brake pads

I've never changed brakes before and I'm sure it can't be that bad... I've read about it in the Haynes Manual but it wasn't very helpful.

I changed my own alternator, and I doubt it's much worse. So can anyone help me out?

Thanks

Josh

As far as I know (don't quote me) but I think you have to take it to the dealership or something, they some how hook it up to a computer and do a "computer bleed" or something like that, where it bleeds the right amount of brake fluid or something, I heard of someone having to do that before to a 96 model mercery. I think that you have to do it that way, not sure, just thought I'd let you know.

Uhmmm No I had it done before at a local shop and they charged me $30 to just put brakes on. Only took them about 15 minutes to do so I know it's not that hard.

I have those autozone carbon metallic's that have a lifetime warranty and I actually have the receipt still! So I'm gonna hopefully get the brakes for free, put em on for free, and have no charge for this

If you are only replacing pads and or rotors, you do not need to go to a dealer or shop. There shouldn't be any reason to bleed the system for just a pad change. For the pads, I believe it only requires unbolting part of the caliper, not even total removal.
• Unbolt top of caliper and lossen lower bolt
• Rotate caliper away from the rotor, but don't allow it to hang on the brake lines
• Remove the old pads
• Compress the pistons back into the housing to make room for the thicker pads
• Insert new pads
• Replace caliper, and torque bolts to spec
This is only a simplified list, so I apologize for not fully answering your question for detailed instructions, but you can certainly perform this maintanence at home.

I think you'll need hex wrenches.

A hex driver was used on the caliper bolts, but I can't say what size :( sorry. You will need something to press the piston back into the caliper as well. Either a good size C-clamp or a very large pliers. Put something across the piston so you don't mar it.

this is just an idea but you might want to go ahead and get new rotors also. I am willing to bet if this is your second set of pads after the originals your rotors are getting kinda thin..
