Need some Tips on Front and Rear Shock/Spring Install

  • Need some Tips on Front and Rear Shock/Spring Install

    Ive looked through some installs:
    LS1Howto, YearOneInstall, as well as the service manual.

    One says I need to remove the upper ball joint on the steering knuckle, and the other says I won't need to. My service manual says I should remove the lower ball joint.

    So my plan is to try to get it out with out unhooking either, and see where it takes me.

    Anybody got some tips for the Install. Im going with new front KYB AGX Adjustable shocks in the front and Gabriel Air Shocks in the back. With a 93-97 Eibach Sportline drop Springs. And a 1le 32mm Front Sway bar w/ poly bushings.

    the rears are easy just jack the car high enough and then let the rear axle hang as low as possible. up front you don't have to reomve either just unbolt the everything and muscle them out, its easist on the side with out the brake lines.

      I didn't remove any of the ball joints either for the fronts when I put in my ground control kit..

        Good to hear. I wasn't looking foward to taking apart the steering knuckle.

          Undo the upper ball joint. I have done springs/shocks on a 4th gen more times than I can count. Trust me, it's really easy anyway, just a cotter pin and castle nut. Then whack it with a hammer a few times to separate it from the knuckle.

            Exactly what he said.

            And make sure after you've replaced your master cylinder, don't expect the first press on the brakes to stop you.

              Well, Since now I can check this off as experiance. There are a few things I would recommend for someone else doing this on their own.

              1. Get that special socket that fits on the end of the shock rod.

              2. Prepare to buy new upper strut mounts on the front. The nut on the top of the strut assemble was so rusted, I couldn't make out where the nut ended and the rod began.I had to cut the rod through the compressed spring, and I still could only save one upper mount. The other had rusted and siezed to the shock rod.
