And those that question the propotioning valve issue.... if you swap rears from the same generation, there is no issues. It's when you interchange generations. 93-97, 98-02. The valve is the same part number from V6 to V8 in the GM manuals.

could somebody list the exact problems with installing 98+ disc brakes on a 97 drum rear. Is the only problem with the brake lines since the calipers will be on the front of the hub instead of the rear as the 93-97 discs were?\'01 Mineral Grey SVT Cobra
-former F-body owner

Robert will be the "end all be all" answer man for this one, but IF I'm not mistaken, the calipers are different sized and will displace more fluid. this will cause issues for older braking system and need an external propotioning valve added. The lines may need to be custom made because GM rarely will make life easy as to "plug and play" with different generations, thus the comment about staying to the correct generation. I also think the e-brake is different some how... I don't know if it's an internal baby drum or just a modifed lever like Gen 1 is.
Is there a reason you want a Gen 2 rear end in a Gen 1 car?

I figured if I go to the trouble of doing the drum to disc conversion, I might as well spend the extra $50 to get the 98+ style and have the nicer looking aluminum calipers/ better braking ability. I had planned on doing a front conversion as well. Nice to have everything match.
Ive already completely built my Gen 1 rear end other than brakes, so I dont want to swap a used and abused Gen 2 rear end in.\'01 Mineral Grey SVT Cobra
-former F-body owner

The ABS is different between 93-97 and 98+. It is not worth the effort to put a 98+ rear axle in a 93-97.

ok. Im not argueing, and will probalby go with a LT1 disc setup. But I thought there were several people that have swapped in whole 98+ rear ends successfully, which would suggest that if they can get the ABS to work, then it shouldnt be a much dissimialar problem with just the calipers and mounting hardware. I was expecting just mounting/ fabrication issues to get the brackets attached to the 93-97 rear-end since the calipers switched from back-front mounted between the years.\'01 Mineral Grey SVT Cobra
-former F-body owner
