  • Y87 conversion going good...until...

I got it back from beginning my Y87 conversion. Started with the gears and posi rear. Had the car for about 3 hours when I found out...

Installing gears and (more so) posi, had a direct effect on my power steering pump...think about that for a second and it'll make sense.

I completely lost all power steering. Drove home that way, drove around this morning that way. Fighting a pair of 235's with standard rack and pinion. All buff now.

So I spent from 11:30 this morning, till 1:30 - skippin' lunch swapping the power-assist equip. out. I was worried it'd be expensive - Autozone $32.99 with Lifetime Warranty.

Only difficult part was getting the hoses at the clamps to break free and come off. After that it was very simple and straight forward. Knew I should of worn my gloves, gave it the ol "^*#& it!" and of course half hour into it I bust 3 knuckles and my wrists looks like I squeezed a cat too hard. Oh well.

After having seen how small the power steering pump actually is, I think I am going to invest in a power steering cooler as equipped on the SS. Now I just need the 14:1 steering gear box and I'll be good to go. But that can wait.

Lesson learned. FYI Don't go lock to lock when your power oversteering pushes you into understeering. Its just not cricket!

thats not from the "Y87 converstion" its from the donuts you were spinning last night, ive blown mine up doing that. no need for steering cooler, just watch the long donuts.

WTF are you talking about -- changing rear stuff blows out your power steering. Umm ... ? But go ahead and get a cooler, I got mine for $35 or so, everyone should have one. Keep us updated on getting the 14:1 box ... and what was $33 from autozone -- the power steering pump or some other component?

You can do donuts, its just that, you have to remember to steer the car with the throttle. You need very little steering input to do the roundy-round mod.

I'm looking into this Y87 conversion and brought this puppy back from the dead. Any thoughts on how to do the 14:1 steering? ...just swap the box?

I got the 02' intermediate section(the knuckle section) where it turns if you have a 93-97 and just a FE2 rack/pinion for the swap, should be great for mine since I won't have the rag joint style anymore.

So I don't need the lower steering column? Is the FE2 rack just the standard part for say, a 2000 Z28?

hmm... when I look up the part on autozone and advanced, I get the same part number. Wonder if the Z28 part is the replacement all the way around... or perhaps the V6 parts is...

I got a 02' R/P for my 96' and all I needed was the intermediate shaft that comes on 98-02 F- bodies. The racks are all the same just different ratios, FE2,FE4,FE7 check out the writeup thats up top.

Where can I find a decent kit with all the necessary parts to do hook up a posi rear end/Y87

I'm very unfamiliar with rear-ends and their parts. Forgive me. However, I can figure out how to install it.
