• Anyone Swapped LS1/Y87 Steering rack in?

Anyone done this yet? I bought a LS1 steering rack out of an 01 SS with 12K miles on it. Put it in and am having some issues. My steering wheel is off. I know I need an alignment but I am worried that it might be a bit much to align.

Do I need to buy the LS1 steering linkage as well too or should just the rack be alright?

I emailed TAcreations and they said that all the linkage is the same but it looks different from my 99 to a 00 V6 camaro.

Is the Y87 exactly the same as the LS1 steering rack?

      Any difference in a 99 Y87/LS1 rack and a 01 Y87/LS1 rack?

the linkage is probably differnet hawgs..

it explanes how some people have header rub issues and others dont..

i would imagine that the 2000+ linkage is different.. look it up in a parts manual..

the ls1 linkage probably wont work, your best bet is to try and get the v6 linkage from a y87 car..

Hou-Tex-Six and I figured it out. Ill post incase anyone else runs into this problem.

In 93-97 all FBodies used the same linkage. From 98-02 the LS1 got a new steering rack with new linkage but the 98-99 V6 stayed the same. From 00-02 the V6 got the same linkage and rack as an LS1.

So basically I just need to pick up linkage off an LS1 or a 00+ V6 and that will fix it.

Install wasnt too bad at all. We had problems with the steering linkage, but now I know why.

Install was only 7 bolts. There are 2 bolts that go through the k-member (one of them is a ***** because its right below the AC and its too long, so you have to get creative), 2 for the tie rods, 2 lines that go into the "box" (for lack of better word) and one that holds the linkage to the shaft that comes out of the box.

Feels much better... its much stiffer so its harder to turn but it makes it feel more like a performance driven car then my moms Audi. Higher speeds you barely have to move the wheel at all to move. Its great. I jsut can't wait to get the steering wheel fixed... its 90* off and thats annoying as hell. :D

SO 00-02 got same linkage and rack as the ls1 and share the same turning ratio?

Linkages are same for 00-02 for all cars, RACKS are different. Y87 and LS1 rack are the same. V6 rack is different. If any one cares, the 98-99 V6 linkage (same as LT1's) sucks.

Oh, and Merlin, you know well who figured it out...
