Steering connection question

Ok, I did a search and someone had this problem but didnt post how they fixed it- and I think I had a good idea but I havent had a chance to test it.

( work with me on the terms - Im no good with them )

Ok so I swaped in a whole V8 front when I bolted up my motor and tranny - ls1 - and I went to connect the steering wheel to the Kmemeber ( the steering rack I guess? ) and I cant get it connected. Its close but I cant connect it- and I dont wanna have to drop the motor and do that again - so does someone know an easy fix, or Is there a way I can pull on the steering wheel to get its shaft to recess - if I could get like an 1nch or 2 I could get it on. ( I didnt actually try pullin on the wheel ) the thought didnt occur to me.

What year is your car? depending on this you may need a new steering linkage.

97 car - Y87 - so I have the lt1 steering componets to start with. I have all the LS1 parts I might need but would would need to be swaped?

I read that link before, I have the ls1 steering parts and Im still having clearance probs, thats Y i was thinkin about pullin the steering wheel back

Edit: I have a complete Ls1 front on my car now. The only thing that is still from my v6 that has to do with steering is the steering wheel itself and the rod that connects directly to the wheel. all other parts I have are ls1. ( however I still have all my v6 parts around. )

You need the LS1 linkage or linkage from a 00+ V6... it is the same. Call TACreations and they will send it out to you. 10 bucks for the part and shipping was around 8 bucks for me.

I ordered this from them yesterday. I had to convince them to sell it to me but they sent it out yesterday. That should fix your problem.

In 93-97 & 98-99V6 they have a rubber joint whereas the LS1s and 00+V6s dont. [img]smile.gif[/img]

how hard is it to change the linkage?

I gave it a shot today and couldnt get it to seat 100%, It started, but then I couldnt get any force on the bottom to get it down snug, so it just slips out after some movement-
And I really cant wait =( I need to get my car running like 3 weeks ago

My guess is if you have all the parts from the LS1 then you just need it to fit right. It can be a bit of a ***** to get the linkage to fit onto the rack itself.

-Put the linkage on the body (the stering wheel side )first, but keep the bolt loose, you'll need a little play.

-Next try to get the other end of the linkage on the rack itself. We had to dremel the inside of the linkage side (the sleeve i guess you could call it) that goes into the rack to get it to fit, so this might be a problem for you too. Maybe this is what you mean when you say its close but it doesent want to go in all the way? You can also open up the sleeve part that slides on to the rack with a screwdriver. It has to go in far enough so you can put that bolt in there and tighten her down. You will also noice that the linkage and the peice it slides over on the rack have to lined up, it only goes in one way. so prealign them before trying to insert the linkage.

-Then remeber to tighten up the bolt on the top side of the linkage. Connect all the lines and you should be money.

Even if you didnt have the right linkage you should still be able to get it on, but being as you said you have all the parts from the LS1, id use those. I think you have what you need, you just need to get it all put on. Its not fun, but not complicated either.

I am greatful for what you have written, I think if I would have known using the dremel woulda worked I would have done that, because thats the problem, I can start to slide the linkage to the Kmemeber( power steering part ) secondly, after hammering the top part on , but then I cant get it to go down completely. I can even use the steering wheel partially but then on a full turn it slides off. Maybe forcing it open with the screwdriver woulda done it too. I just figured I didnt wanna damage the part - seeing as how I didnt wanna have to buy another ls1 part that I already started with =) Thx for your help. I will try it again.

Your welcome. Yeah, I had the same problem. Just slightly clean it out with the dremel, it slid right in after we did that. Dont go over board though, you dont wanna ruin the linkage if you go crazy with the dremel, just wanna get the edges smooth. Good luck.
