I bought some pads for my drum brakes today in hopes of changing them because they are really bad. I tried to get the drivers side off first and after about 4 hours I still couldn't get it off. I mean this thing is on there good. I don't think it's ever been off since 1996. Me and my dad hammered away at it, I undid the adjusting screw, lubed it up, we even broke the torch out and tried that. Still nothing, this thing is impossible... I really need to get these off because they are shot so bad. Anyone have anymore ideas? I'd greatly appreciate it.
A big screwdriver to pry with and a hammer to beat it with. That's about the best advice I can give you.

Did you release the parking brake? Also, if it has never been removed before there might be a small clip on one of the wheel studs that held the drums on during assembly.

backfire, the parking brakes was released. I didn't notice a small clip but I probably missed it. I'm going to tackle the beast again soon so I will keep an eye out for it thanks for the help.
On the back of the brake backing plate, there is a small, rubber, oval piece towards the bottom that can be pulled out. When you take it out, you will have access to the brake adjusters. From there, with a snall, flat-head screwdriver, rotate the adjusting screw some to release tension on the brakes. I don't remember offhand which way you will need to turn it, but you will figure it out pretty quick. From there, the drums should slide off.

With the parking brake released, can you turn the drum? If you can, then it is likely that the drum is just stuck to the axle.
Can you pull the drum out even a little bit? If you can, then it is not stuck, and you probably need to back of the brake adjustment a bit, as suggested above.
If it IS stuck to the axle, spay the center hole of the drum with some WD-40, then get the biggest gear-puller you can find, and attach it to the drum, with the center screw resting in the indent of the axle. Tighten up the puller so that the jaws are pulling out on the drum while the center pin is pushing in on the axle. Give it a few extra turns to make sure it is puttin a lot of pressure on the drum. Then rap the drum with a hammer. As the penetrating oil works its way in there, it should start to come loose.
Spray some more. Tighten the puller some more. Rap withthe hammer some more.
Keep repeating this, and you'll get it off.
PS - be careful that you don't hit the wheel studs with that hammer, or you'll be getting even madder trying to replace them, as well.
