  • free rear lowering mod...

    ok, i see that everyone wants to lower the rear of their car... i have a simple solution... "the free rear lowering mod." it doesn't take long and looks great...

    steps:
    1. your gonna need to jack up the rear section of the car, but you have to do it on the body not the axle, or wherever else you can jack it up, and you can't use the one that comes with the car, its simply not tall enough, i used a 2-ton floor jack , worked great.

    2. take the spring out.

    3. on the top of the spring, or it may still be up in the hole the spring is in, there is a big plastic spacer, about 1.25" thick, take it out.

    4. next, i took a regular garden hose and cut it and wrappd it around the top of the spring, so there is no metal to metal rubbing that isn't necessary

    5. stick the spring back where it goes, i tried to keep it lined up the way it was, but im pretty sure that it doesn't matter, just make sure its right side up at least, i dont know if that matters either...

    6. lower the car and do the other side

    viola!(i think thats how you spell it)

    i measured it with my hand cuz it was getting dark(i dont know why it being dark kept me from getting a tape measure, im just lazy)it took it down about 1" maybe 1.25", and looks much better, no differences in ride quality, for a while i heard a little bit of metal to metal but jacked it back up and pushed the hose farther down on the spring and took care of it... if you have any questions please ask... i am not telling you to do this... just a suggestion, i take no responsibility for what you do to your car, thats all, thanks, enjoy!

      this might be a stupid question but..... you didnt have to cut a spring at all? just take a spacer out?

            i'll take a OEM spacer over a garden hose anyday.

              Just like there is a reason GM put a MAF screen, and air silencers in the intake, etc. Doesn't seem to stop people from removing those however.

              I have been running like this for the last few months. No change in ride, no real change in noise either. Only over very severe irregularities you may hear a noise or two. This is not a new mod by any means, many have done it before. Go read some other board's suspension areas. I didn't get a 1.25" drop, but is was visible.

                  Yep,and porting and polishing your heads used to be G-H-E-T-T-O back in the day also ;) Trust me,if SLP or RKSport could make money off of this,you'd see something for sale.Just because you don't pay for a mod doesn't mean that it's ghetto.It just means you're smarter than the average guy.As far as the front end goes,the back sits higher than the front.So a drop of only the back would make the car sit level and look better.Good job on the mod.

                        I just dont like the idea of my springs resting against the sheet metal of my cars body, the springs absorb whatever harsh vibration that the tires dont absorb, and so they will wear through that garden hose eventually... Sorry I will just do it with new springs, the right way...

                          its so easy to just cut the springs i think id do that before i took out the spacer... o well man if you are happy then thats cool..shake the haters off :D

                              Last winter i put 200+ pounds of sandbags in my trunk to keep my car on the road. It lowered it a little :D [img]tongue.gif[/img]
