  • drum breaks

    how to change drum breaks?looking at a good write up, i never tryed so i just want to cover all my bases. and no it's not for my car.

      its horrible, your gonna need a hammer. i hate them so much. i REALLY had a hard time changing them on my sister's 98' escort zx2. my dad ended up getting the driver's side off becuase i couldnt. if the car's older, and you think its gonna be rusty down there, good luck becuase its gonna be a long day. its just frustrating. there's not much too it, just alot of force needed.

        it is alot of bs trying to do it but it can be done with alot of patience and alot more force...

        only thing i can say to help is get a haynes manual and make sure you have the proper tools as wel las the new harware, shoes, and adjuster....

          it is a pain to do but honestly its not that hard. just when you take everything out lay it down on the ground like it is on the wheel that way you cant mix anything up. and make sure you do one wheel at a time. dont even touch the one side until the other side is done because if you get stuck and cant find where something goes just walk over to your other wheel and look at how its set up. its pretty easy once you know what your doing. from how you brag about what you do as far as work to your car i think you should be just fine. if your still worried buy a manual for it.

            forgot to say... take a picture of of each side of the brakes before you disassemble them this will aid you in the install.... you dont have to but back in the day i with my first car i would have been lost since my tech manual for the car was junk

            i havent had an issue with drums since that first time but I was sure happy i thought of the camera so why keep the idea to myself..

                Not really, because all drum brake setups are different in their own way...especially imports! It takes practice and patience though. You'd probably be better off buying a chilton's or haynes book for the car you are installing them on and go by their step-by-step procedure.

                  yeah they are all different but also all the same. the principle is the same and once you do it once you can easily figure it out on any car but i cant really give you a step by step unless ive done it on that car. just go buy a manual from pepboys for it. it will make things easier.

                    Yeah changing drum brakes is pretty easy, but I would get a Haynes or Chiltons manual (I like Haynes personally) for the step-by-step. Just don't put the parking brake on or you'll never get the drums off.
