• 255's on an 8" wheel?

im looking into getting a new set of tires (bf goodwrench g-sport t/a's) and i would like to get a set of 255/45/17s but im not sure if they will fit on my wheels - i have some 17"x8" cragars...any suggestions....should i step down to a 245? any thoughts on these tires?

thanks

You should be fine with a 255/45/17 on a 17x8 width. The manufacturer specs show your specific tire and size will fit on any wheel between 8-9.5" in width. The width difference between the 245, and 255 is negligible, but the 245(assuming 245/45/17) will be a good bit shorter. This will result in the standard gearing/odometer/speedometer changes that you may, or may not want.

Well the 255/50/16 is the max on the factory 16x8's so I wouldn't think a 255 in a 17" would be a problem.

Re: 255's on an 8" wheel?

I tend to go by the manufacturers specs on a per tire basis. For the most part Nikos95 is correct, that a 255 width in any size(16, 17, 18) will fit on an 8" wide rim. However, you have to keep in mind the aspect ratio as well. A 255 width tire with a tall sidewall(255/50/16), will fit better on an 8" rim than a 255 width tire with a shorter sidewall(255/45/17).

Here's an example:

A 315/75/16 tire will fit an 8" wide wheel easy, but a 315/40/16(Not an available size) would have no chance of fitting an 8" wide wheel.

Here's another:

Specs for BFG G-Force Sport

255/50/16 fits 7-9" wheel width - An 8" wheel sits right in the middle
255/45/17 fits 8-9.5" wheel width - This tire sits at the lowest end of the recommended widths
255/40/17 fits 8.5"-10" wheel width - This tire won't even fit on an 8" wide wheel

Even though the widths are the same, the recommended wheel widths are different due to the aspect ratio(255/X/17)

You can't blanket the comment and say, "Well, my 28x11.5x16 slicks fit on my 16x8 rims, so your 315/40/16 should fit fine."

However, with the relatively small width tires(255) you should be fine with an 8" rim regardless of aspect ratio.

why wouldn't that fit on an 8" wheel? the aspect ratio is just a percentage of the width of the tire... if you can fit a 50 or 45, Why couldn't you fit a 40 or 35 even?

what does the profile of the tire have to do with the rim size?

In this specific case, yes, a 255/45/17 will fit on an 8" rim. Why won't a 255/40/17, or 255/35/17 fit? Read this:

http://www.dunloptires.com/care/widthRatio.html

You are correct that a 255mm wide tire in any aspect ratio should PHYSICALLY fit on an 8" wide wheel, but the above link shows what happens when you try to stretch a low profile tire on a too-wide wheel.

got it, will fit, but difficultly and dangerously.
