  • rims and tires question

I currently have the original factory rims with the 5 star pattern with 235/50/16 kumho tires. however its about that time to change the rims/tires and im looking at the stock rims/replica 5 spoke rims for 97. I live in wisconsin with snow and rain and am looking for a good tire and tire size to fit the 16x8 rims. any suggestions on what brand/model/size of tires to put on these new rims that will be good for traction all around and will last for a long time. Thanks!

    Re: rims and tires question

I went thru this a couple years ago here in Washington. Lots of rain and it snowed now and then.
I bought my 94 used & it had hipo tires on it.
I got some Goodyear Eagle RS-A 245-50-16's for it at $90 ea.
They worked awsome in all weather.

I whent to a 275-40-17 summer radial last year & drive my truck in bad weather now.
    just my 2c.

You have three obvious choices for tire size.

215/60-16. Stock tire for V6s. Most comfortable ride, best in rain or snow. Cheapest. Some people don't like the look. Less dry weather traction than the alternatives in hard maneuvers.

235/55-16. Y87 option tire for V6s. In between the tires above and below.

245/50-16. V8 tires. Best dry weather traction, stiffer ride, "nibbles" more over road irregularities. Most expensive. Generally these are made as performance tires and wear faster, although it has little to do with the size itself. Most people think the wide tires look better.

Personally, I didn't like the RSAs that came stock with my car. Not the best traction, wore rapidly. Check www.tirerack.com for decent ratings of various tires.

If you live in snow country, you might want to put a set of real snow tires (marked with a snowflake and a mountain) on your old rims for winter.

How about the 17" Chrome .. like the ones on a late model WS6 Trans Am. Do you guys think there would be any issue using these wheels/tires on a 94-97 V6? I don't mean traction or weather performance, just asking if they will "fit" or mount properly.

          Thanks.
