i've wondered about this a few time, but i still havnt got any good answers. id really like to have this fixed though.

the problem is i get a really high pitched squeak when tunring left. never happens on right turns. it also doesnt happen when the car is going slow. its only turns from about 20 mph up, and it has to be a fairly firm turn. i replaced all four brake pads and that hasnt helped. the rotors are aftermarket rotors, im not sure if that would have anything to do with it. any other ideas? im really stumped on this one. help would be very much appreciated!

yea I got that too. Hopefully someone can help us. I have these crazy michigan u-turns and hear it sometimes going around them.

yea, its really getting to me now. out of curiousity, did you do a drum to disk swap by any chance? i was thinking maybe somehow its related to that??

yea I did the z28 rear end swap. Doubt that has anything to do with it. I think it is in the brakes though like the left one is not releasing all the way maybe when we turn left. I dunno. I have been just living with it and used to it now.

did you swap in an entire rear end, or just the brakes?

if you did just the brakes, did you use the shims that i talked about in my review: http://forum.camarov6.com/showthread.php?t=63738 (i did not, the measurements i took seemed to show i didnt need them)

Here is the solution.
One or maybe both of the rear rotors is rubbing a rear caliper bracket. I can almost guarentee this is causing the noise, it happens on LT1 rear brakes a lot.

There are two fixes.
The first is to remove the caliper bracket from the axle (2 bolts) and slide the bracket off off the caliper (just slide it off).
If you look closely at the bracket you will see the spots where the rotor is rubbing, you will also see the circular marks on the rotor too.
Get the disk grinder out and clearance the bracket in the areas where the contact is occuring and reassemble. I had to do this two times to completely silence the squeak.

The second method is to place a pair of thin washers or shims behind the bracket where it bolts to the axle. You are trying to slightly move the caliper bracket outward just a bit. I think GM actually sells the shim kit for this exact problem, however i dont know the part number.

The reason this happens is normal wear on the axle c-clips and or doing a R&P change. The axle is now allowed to extend outward in a hard turn and the rotor makes the loud squeak when it contacts the caliper bracket

interesting, good find. I have slotted and drilled rotors on mine and will have to check out that caliper bracket and see if I can get it to go away. Have you tried it yet?

i havnt tried it yet, but go out and look at your rotors. if it happens on left turns, look at the rotor on the left side of the car. the outer lip on the outer face of the rotor should look more worn than the rotor on the right side of the car. mine sure does.i can post a picture if you want. im really hoping this is the problem.

Yeah thats your problem, I just swapped to LT1 brakes and had the same issue, its only ever the left side too. Weird.

whats odd is that i never had the problem until after i got my aftermarket rotors. i suppose since the rotors were thicker (never yet turned) they rubbed more.

check to see if ure tie rods need to be greased...its a little thing that many ppl forget to do and mine was makin a squeaking noise and i like checked everywhere but tie rods and thats what it was......

i fixed it today. the issue with the brakes was definitely the problem. i used the washer method combined with a little grinding and the noise totally went away.

you can see the groove of the bracket in this picture. this is where the outside of the rotor was rubbing. i used a dremel to grind it down a bit.



here you can see where the rotor was rubbing.



here is where i added some thin washers. i have the actual shims that are supposed to go behind the backing plates. you can "cheat" by putting washers like these where the caliper mounts to the backing plate. i just matched the thickness of the washers to the shim. they are THIN. about half the thickness of a penny.



after i did these two things, i had no more squeak :banana:
